A mala is a set of prayer beads used to count prayers or mantras. Malas were first popular in India and Tibet but their use has spread throughout the world. Malas are made with 108, 27, 21 or 11 beads. The last bead on a mala is called the guru bead. I make malas with 11 and 27
beads. The particular stone used in the mala produces particular effects.
